What’s the best for the snow that will not spin me out in the rain?

A limited slip combined with stability control.

You don't want to drive with locked differentials on pavement.

Is there a limited slip that can turn into a locker for when it does snow? Is that what external lockers are for?

I’m just thinking about the avalanche, it’s gotta be my snow vehicle now and I want it to be able to get me out when all else fails. I’m sure it’s a lot about tires but a true locker has to help. Or maybe I’m wrong.

I liked having selectable lockers on the LJ. So depends on what kind of money you want to spend as well.

Eaton makes a worm gear lsd that will last forever. All you really would need really. Otherwise Auburn makes an lsd with elocker. It’s the best of both worlds.

For light snow I would take my escape. I’m talking when we get half an foot. And while that may not sound like a lot to some of you, with the hills and curves half a foot makes things crazy where I live.

I like the idea of selectable. Can you really add that to older vehicles?

Honestly you probably will be fine with a standard automatic locker if just snowy hills. Selectable lockers are better for true off-road stuff.

Tires. Seriously - a good set of tires will solve so much. My parents live up a steep and curvy dirt road and we never had issues with snow. And goodness knows we get a lot of it at times there.

Worm gear (Torsen type) will turn into an open diff on ice. They're torque multiplying differentials. If one wheel has zero traction, then anything times zero is zero.

Mitsubishi offered a clutch type LSD combined with an air locker on the 2nd gen Montero, so I'd assume other manufacturers did as well. But you'd need to research that.

Frode nailed it with the tires though. The right tires are going to help a lot more than any gadgets will. However, the right tires and the right gadgets should be unstoppable.

Yes. I will spend a good chunk of money on tires. But snow is different everywhere. Trust me 6 inches of snow and I will need every bit of help I can get.

Came here to say this. They're great in Motorsports. Not in ice or off road

Which Montero got a clutch and air in the same package? All 3 of mine were air only. Open when unlocked

This is what the Humvee has. You have to apply a little brake while apply gas to keep the Torsen locked. I did get to play with it a couple times when I would get the Humvee to 3 wheel.

You need to know what axle it has

Good tires only go so far. Open diffs will stop you in several inches of snow and a steep slope like Coops yard no matter how good your tires are.

Exactly, the weight will be a big downside to the avalanche but where I live I need a real locker but only once a year. But when I need it, I don’t have a choice so I WILL be getting one. Just want one that’s the most daily when not needing it but bad ass when I need it.
