Speaking of everything being crazy expensive... You can now option out a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid and have the price hit $38k (including destination and delivery but excluding accessories)
What type of hybrid does it have? More like a volt? Or more like an accord hybrid?

There is a local crosstrek for sale....50k miles...24k. Too expensive for me.
For the most part though, it is not that cars are more expensive compared to everything else, it is just inflation. Everything is more expensive now.
Not really though. The increase in price is is faster than the official rate of inflation. While inflation is pushing the costs of cars up, cars are actually just more expensive now than they were in the past.

It's a plug in hybrid capable of 17 miles of fully electric operation. So it's basically like the Ford Cmax Energi

This.

I should have bought a vehicle 2 years ago. It’s stupid honestly.

Doesn't help that people demand more and more bloatware in cars. Hard to keep costs down when you keep jamming more crap into them.

This is a huge part of it, plus all the additional safety requirements. Like backup cameras are required now, so that adds cost, side airbags, the list goes on. I mean when a car starts at 25k, after a few years, it's not surprising that it's at 15k used.

Back up cameras are required now?

The safety stuff has started to become an issue for the rescue people. 2017 and up the core of the cars are freaking strong. The companies brought us a B post for us to try and cut. Our jaws of life just dented it. Great for crashes....bad if your trapped in.

For 2018 and newer cars yes, backup cameras are required. It's to help prevent people backing into, and over, small children.

- Backup Cameras are required, and are safety (ASIL) rated parts now.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Automatic Emergency Breaking (AEB) are also required to reach 4 star crash ratings now.
- All cars after 2018 or 2019 are required to have some form of driver short range communication (DSRC based on some 802.11 standard).

All that requires front and rear cameras (and their electronics) as well as possibly radar, not to mention ultrasonics depending upon how you implement things.

It's why the ADAS movement has been so strong, if you're going to require an extra 1k worth of parts they can unlock ACC or Lane Keep as a 5k upgrade.

What is the best time of year to go car shopping between now and next March, I think early next year would be best? I feel like if I go Volt, I would need to lease.

I really like the idea of a pickup, but not sure it's worth it.

I really like the idea of a BMW or Audi, used, but the reliability/repair seems excessive.

So I may just go for a late model edge? Or F150? I really like their keyless entry.

Why not get something CPO? Can usually get them for a decent price with a good warranty. My Volt was CPO, came with an extended 4/48 Platinum warranty. Got it for $17k out the door with just over 30k miles on it.

Assuming that means certified pre owned, it's exactly what I would be interested in! I do really love the gen2 volt, I wish Ford wouldn't have axed the C240 platform (which would've competed).

Honestly I'm torn between a car, a truck and a crossover. I think if it's going to be a car, a volt or maybe a used BMW (because I like the styling) and that's about it. But those compact wagons are nice, and I do spend a lot of time in nature so the ground clearance is useful.

Knowing too much about the xHEV return problems, I still don't think I would own one outright- although it's a lot better now than the Prius' of 2008.

Ya. If you need ground clearance, skip the Volt. I think I have about 3-4" max in the front. Barely get my jack under it too.

Either next year or the year after I might get myself the 2nd gen Volt since I have the XJ for ground clearance. They are doing a good deal right now locally. I can buy a new one for just a bit more than I pay now on mine, but with the fact that I might be moving in the next 1-2 years really shouldn't be adding debt right now.

It’s also how much suspension travel you have. I have an air diverter on my vr4, can’t get a jack under it (unless it’s the low pro ones but even then you can’t jack a lot till it get high enough) but the suspension travels enough for me to cover places my crv can’t.

I haven't scraped the under-body yet in the Volt, but scrape the front daily. It has a rubber air dam on the front that has about 3" of room so rubs on EVERYTHING. Also have to be careful when pulling into parking spots with a curb. Car is too low and you will scrape the front.

Have you considered the Droid Turbo?
