Re: Random car updates
Ordered a timing belt and found a lower timing belt cover.
Short throw shifter came in. Its a lot shorter than even the 6 speed. Arnt the shifts suppose to be shorter as well? When I get back I am going to try and powder coat everything lube it up, and then assemble it. Gonna take some comparison pictures (I know its been done, but not in a while) of the stock 5 speed, stock 6 speed, and this one.
Also my rear view mirror showed up for the Humvee. Thats happy.
Just gotta find time to work on the vehicles!

Re: Random car updates
Finally got a chance to tape off and powder coat the shifter base and parts. Im trying a new after blast cleaner that is suppose to really prep the metal for powder coat. It also prevents rust. We will see how it does. Toxic stuff really. So I dont know if I like it over what Ive been doing.
Wish I had time to assemble but the wife has to leave for a school thing and so I just have to wait for the parts to cool down till I can assemble and install.

Got the shifter assembled. Does the center console have to be removed to swap shifter bases?

Time wise, it may be a hell of a lot quicker not to though? I prob will. Dang, this small idea is becoming stupid amounts of work.
Pulling the console is not hard.
Ive done it a couple times. The side bolsters need to be removed, pain, my carpet then makes it hard to align, and pretty sure there are modules attached to it. Is it hard, no. Is it time consuming, yes. Especially if I didnt have to. But I need to get to air bag computer right there anyways. Hopefully I can find an hour to instal it tomorrow.

Installed short throw shifter. Holy poop the front to back difference is crazy! I took pictures and posted on 3si if anyone is interested but still havent made myself another account to upload stuff.
Anyone ever had to adjust cables after? It feels like its going in every gear just fine, but reverse doesnt but it might be because it was in reverse last and it just goes in easier.

Re: Random car updates
Got to tinker in the garage some. Got the oil changed. Added a copper washer when putting the drain plug back in. Got to put in one of those rear hatch inside retracting covers. Had it forever but just found it and had time. Was missing some other things in the trunk, little panels and those circle screw covers. Had them as well, but just got time to attach them.

Re: Random car updates
Been working on the car all day. Couple people here have gotten txts. I had one of the first pre set cam gears. They werent marked with colors. Thanks Hans for helping me out.
Then ninja cam locks just crush. I get they prob cost 2 bucks of printed plastic but it should say somewhere not to be used to torque cam bolts. I ended up drilling one and filling it with epoxy. Worked great then.
I finally got the timing set. Got the lower timing cover on. Was putting back on the motor mount and the bolt dropped in the timing cover......40 mins with a magnet, another 20 taking things apart to pull the cover some....still no bolt. I had to walk away. May not get to even finish today when I was SOOOOO close. Im pretty pissed. The same cover I put on to make sure this didnt happen keeps a bolt in there, its ironic. So that STUPID power steering tensioner has to come off. I hate that thing. Then the 8 or so cover bolts. Then I can find that nut.
Grrrrrr.

Alright. All back together. Went to start and it wouldnt do it. Battery is on the charger right now.
I forgot what a pain in the ass that was. Taking off the motor mount and alternator bracket for the timing belt sucks. Someone should be shot for that.

Re: Random car updates
Car started, sounded great. Pulled her out and in just to feel her. When I put her back together before she would lug really bad at first. I thought it was running rich, now that I think of it, I think it was not in time as far as with a timing light. That was gone. I also wanted to see how 1st and R felt with the shifter. R is gonna take some getting use to as I use to have to pull it way back. Now its simple. But felt good overall.

Re: Random car updates
Yeah, dont use cam lockers to torque the timing gears, get a wrench on the hex on the cam to hold them, unless you like broken plastic all down in the timing belt.

Re: Random car updates
I have metal cam locks made that work great for that. They look just like the plastic ones, but extend a little longer to grab more teeth on the gears. I'm not sure if Chris has his printed ones made at the same place that makes mine... but yea... I'd not use those to torque the bolts.

Well sell the metal ones. I dont need them at this min but would buy the metal ones over plastic ones.

Re: Random car updates
Ain't nobody going to spend the money on them. Most people are once and done. By the time this gets programmed and made, they would have to sell for like $100 a set LOL.

Re: Random car updates
Yup and if you would have told me I needed those to torque the cams I would have bought them.
Matts right, wrench in cams would work, but I didnt wanna take off my plenum in order to do the timing. I believe, as I said in our message, life 3/sers will still pay money for a tool that will work and stay around.
On yours did you give yourself a little more slack to get them in easier?

I would like to take out my pre-Oiler switch and use something stock so I dont have an ugly switch. Its on a 15amp fuse, what switch would work?

Spark plugs.
I am going to add some things to the list that bug me.
Rear valve stem leaks so every week I have to air up that single tire.
A real alignment.
Finish properly the rear battery
I am seriously close to getting a lot of stuff done to the car that Ive been wanting to for a while. Prob time for it to blow up.
