I've been hearing about how this is some amazing new engine, but hadn't really read about it until now. It basically uses gasoline in a compression ignition engine. It's supposed to be way more efficient.

In a really weird way, it reminds me of a nuclear explosion. A nuclear weapon uses a small fission explosion to light off a larger fusion event. This engine uses a spark and a small extra burst of fuel at the last instant to increase compression and cause the lean mixture that was already in there to ignite.

It's pretty cool.

Seems interesting. Wondering if it's better because it gets a better amount of energy from the timing of the fireball or if the fuel mixture is just that much better because of the swirl. Either way I'm sure it will be forever till we see it.

It's a combination of the fact they can run it super lean, but also really well mixed.

We'll see it soon. They already have journalists doing press drives of prototypes.

It should be interesting what they are able to accomplish with this new engine. Mazda is already getting among the best MPG with just gasoline engines.
