Plasti-dip the Spyder?

Post by vegasidol »

As most of you (that have been paying any attention) know, the Spyder's paint is terrible condition. The clear coat is chipped and bubbled all over the tonneau and faded elsewhere.

So Greg is selling his dip kit, and I'd like to jump on it, but I have several concerns.

1. Even with proper prep of the surface, will it look bad over the chipped clear coat?

2. With a thick enough coat, will the dip to peal off when we want it to (not stick and be a pita)?

3. None of their orange colors are exactly the orange we have in mind. Do these colors mix?

Any other thoughts?

Best pic I could find of the tonneau flaking.

Whenever you use forceful and overt verbal persuasion to try to convince others to see things your way, they're probably not listening to what you say, Instead they're looking for every error in you your logic and mistakes in your facts, all the while constructing counterarguments. Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. I wouldn't worry about more clear coat coming off as it's screwed anyways and plasti dip comes off.....I say do it.

the surface should look fine, plastidip is thicker than paint, so the amount of coats needed to get good coverage would cover up any scratches or issues with the clear as long as you get most of the flaky parts off. it may peel off small parts that arent well adhered, but only in areas where its already flaking. i dont know if they mix.

That same color with copper metalizer over it may be close to what you are looking for

I'm worried about the clear coming off under the p-dip and causing blemishes or tearing. I couldn't care less about the actual paint on the car right now.

The orange cars always look like sherbet. But that orange with copper may have just changed my mind.

It still seems like a huge pain in the ass though.

I've got the original bumper, and a couple spare fenders. I've even got a whole rear quarter. I wish I could buy this stuff locally. I'd do exactly that.

Looks like it needs a fair amount of bodywork anyways. Anything the Plastidip would do to the paint wouldn't be anything near what's already happened to the paint.

For something temporary - I guess why not.

Long term though, a full strip down and repaint would be in order.

That's the very tentative plan A. Plan B is sell it as-is to someone else who wants a project car.

Sorry. You'd have to give me the WRX + cash before I'd take a bug-eye.

It's been leak-free for a few weeks now. We'll see if it stays that way.

Just realized my wording was not clear on this.

I don't care about the clear coat pealing off...I just want the dip to peal off when we want it to (not stick and be a pita).

i doubt it, its decently easy to peal off, but you still have to work at it

Yeah, definitely want some depth to the color, not a bright/light orange.

I think we can, I've been reading a lot hardware shops have the stuff now, just depends if they have the colors we want. Should start looking around.

the koi orange is DYC exclusive, they will probably only have the blaze orange at hardware stores.

Those were permanent fixes. Not a temporary dalliance.
