It only makes the noise when you first start it up after sitting for a long time. If you go for awhile it stops. When you hit a bump it is alot louder of a thudding noise. When I shift the transmission from park into reverse the Jeep jumps badly, then from neutral to drive it does the same thing. It really jumps bad. It is having a hard time starting too after it sits.

The tranny fluid is fine. I checked the oil, it is a bit low, so I went to add some and the oil cap broke off. I have to go home and use whatever tools I have to try and get it off.

Would low oil have anything to do with this?

No. Not if you are referring to engine oil.

it turned out to be one of the brackets that hold up the exhaust is broken. Sheared right in half. The exhaust is hitting the under carriage.

Anyone know anything about the jerking at start up though?

No, but there is a small click when I do brake, and when I release there is a small squeak. I think it is coming from the front drivers side.

Check your motor mounts and tranny mount. I bet therein lies your problem. :D

Sounds like a tranny mount to me.

The noise was the exhaust. I have yet to fix it, but that is the problem. The bar that holds it in place above the transfer case cross member broke off.
