Name those mystery pistons

Post by Jeff V. »

DarkHelmet tore into the engine on his 94 R/T Turbo to fix his smoking problem. In doing so, he found these. Definitely not stock. Based on the texture, they look to be forged. Any guesses as to who makes them?

There's a number machined into the bottom of at least one of them. 17025. We can't find that number in any catalogs.

Sorry for the poor cell phone pics. I'm going to get some better ones tonight.

Just based on a quick Google search (17025 piston), it appears 17025 is some sort of quality and standards stamp.

I know that's not any help at all, but just saying it's possible that it might not be a part number.

I figured as much. I just thought I'd toss it out there as additional info.

Damn, those are some huge valve reliefs cut in there. I wonder if they were the first batch of Wiesco pistons that were made to be semi non-interference.

We were thinking Wiseco too, but Wayne Kassel disagrees. He didn't really explain why though.

Got any idea what those custom 8.5:1 3SX/Ross pistons look like? These are similar in shape to the Ross NA pistons, but not as tall.

I wish I could find out more info about the car itself. I've tried for half the day to track the guy down on 3SI, but apparently he didn't post there.

I believe Paul H. on 3si was the one that got those wiesco pistons made up. Maybe he would know. I don't know if he posts on 3si anymore.

I remember when the guy I bought the car from first advertised it he stated that it had a non interference engine. which at the time I called bullshit. now I'm not so sure.

Bottom of the pistons say DRP 289. The 17025 and the F on the top both look to have been etched by a laser. I'll put up the other pics after I eat.

I really want to know who makes these things. Google turns up nothing.

They are definately NOT JE forged pistons. Their part numbers are usually 2 numbers and 1 letter.

Most aftermarket pistons are stamped on the bottom. After you pull one, check the back side of it.

Proper photos. Helmet thinks they're Diamond Racing Products custom parts. They do a lot of high end domestic stuff, but don't seem to stock any import stuff. They're located here in Detroit though, so that gives his theory a lot of support. I'm going to call them on Monday.

Wow, fancy. Those valve reliefs are so huge it almost looks like it would semi ruin the integrity of the piston. Cool none the less. I guess they were working ok so far haha.

Very interesting. What is a 'non - interferance' engine?

If the timing belt brakes the piston's don't smash into the valves.

Right. Which is why I believe they're domed in the middle. I'll bet they're higher CR than stock, but my guess is not that much higher. I hope I can get some answers tomorrow.

Any of you guys know the dish volume of the stock pistons? These are Diamond pistons :D I need to either do the math on the rest of the engine using some hard to come by measurements in order to get the comp ratio, or I need to find out the stock piston volume so I can make an educated guess.
I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

Wow, cool find. I never knew they made pistons for our platform. I would have guess Wiesco as they look similar to my friends out of his 4G63.

if u called up diamond shouldnt they have records of the sale? Which should include what CR the pistons are considering they are one-off.
